August 1944 – December 1944
August 1944. Am now on Tinian Island, a few miles south of Saipan. Our battalion is in support of a Marine division. Our battalion fires 155mm shells up to a range of about 12 miles, and uses small Piper planes to observe accuracy of firings, and relays information to firing crews as to adjustments necessary to hit the target. We are a support battalion to the 24th Corps and are used wherever our artillery support is needed. We are the only Army unit on Tinian. Tinian was taken to provide an airbase for the bombing aircraft soon to arrive. Our Christmas mail from 1943 arrived in October 1944 and was so damaged by water, that we were told that if we were expecting something, to look the pile over and try to find it.
