December 7, 1941 – April 21, 1942
December 7, 1941. Joined a Utah National Guard battalion billeted in tents in a park in Escondido, California, after a midnight ride from Camp Roberts. As a private, I would walk a stretch of beach between Los Angeles and San Diego observing any ship or aircraft activity, or be on guard duty at a central fire department/disaster control station in San Diego. After the initial fear of a Japanese invasion was over, I was able to visit grandma and grandpa Waid (sister of my mother) who lived in their small home on Coronado Island, California.
